In Flanders Fields - Series 2
The challenge issued by the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild President Leigh Lussie was to produce a quilt based on a poem. Other guidelines were to include the entire poem on the back of the quilt which was to have an overall size of 30"x40". My background is by Jeanette Viviano (www.JeanettesFabricstodyefor.com), dyed cotton sateen. Numerous shades of orange and green are incorporated in this fused, beaded and thread painted work. Threads include DMC Embroidery for the machine zig zag applique, Nature Colors Highlights from Superior (www.superiorthreads.com) for the flowers, and Hollis Chatelaine's fluorescent for most of the leaves and a portion of the flowers. Trapunto gives a 3D effect to the flowers. Extensive beadwork was the final step. The beading in the center of the largest flower took 7 hours and 5 minutes to complete. The title is free motion satin stitch. Piping is accomplished with Susan Cleveland (www.Piecesbewithyou.com).
